Success Secrets: Why Business Formulas
Don't Work, and What Does
|
For the accidental entrepreneur, business in itself is a secondary consideration. It is simply not as important to you as your self-regard, your relationships with others, and the quality of your work. As you may have discovered already, trying to subordinate these to a successful formula for business doesn't work. Does that mean success formulas are a waste of time? Before I answer that, let me tell you about my experience baking bread. The Right Way to Bake BreadI used to bake bread every day. At first, I used recipes. When I deviated from the instructions because I didn't have an ingredient or was short on time, the results tended not to be as good as when I followed the directions faithfully. Eventually, though, I baked without an recipes at all, and the bread was terrific. Then, I stopped baking for a few years. The next time I made bread, I picked up where I had left off, tossing together ingredients without benefit of a recipe. The resulting bread was really bad. (And it's not easy to make truly bad bread.) An Important Success Secret: Improvisation Requires StructureWhile there is no single right way to make bread, there are plenty of wrong ways. A skilled baker can improvise freely (abandon the formula) because she is a master of the form. Without thinking about it, she knows which ingredients are optional and which essential, and she knows how what goes into the bread affects the required baking time and temperature. When it comes to baking or business, the success secret for improvisation is using formulas to understand the basic forms. When we see business models as soulless formulas, we resent them. But when we apply business models like recipes, we develop the skill and sensitivity to improvise. Before we get to that stage, however, we need to put in some time following the directions. Success Is Simple, Not EasySuccess for the accidental entrepreneur is a simple matter. Show up. Be present. Listen. Respond. Be grateful. But that doesn't make it easy. Still, it's a lot easier when you look beneath the formulas to find forms you can work with to grow the business that fits just-right.
